What NaturalLocalReader does

Use the Safari extension to send any article straight into the app, or import .txt, .epub, .pdf, .md, or .html files and keep them in a reading library with saved progress. Pick up where you left off, jump to any paragraph or chapter, and listen with simple playback controls.

Chinese content is read by an on-device voice engine with voice cloning. Save multiple named voice references, record a few seconds of speech, and switch between them instantly in Settings. Everything stays on your device. English content uses its own on-device voice engine.

Want your imported books to sound more like an audiobook? Turn on multi-voice narration in Settings with your own free Gemini API key, and each character in the story is automatically assigned its own distinct voice — narration, dialogue, and different speakers all read separately, for both Chinese and English imports. It's entirely opt-in and off by default; audio is still prepared and played back on-device either way.

Privacy

NaturalLocalReader is designed around on-device reading and playback. Safari articles, imported text, and voice reference audio are stored locally on your device and are not uploaded anywhere by default.

No third-party ad trackers.
All speech synthesis and voice cloning runs on-device — your voice data never leaves your iPhone.
Multi-voice narration is optional and off by default. If you turn it on and supply your own Gemini API key, the text of each chapter is sent to Google's Gemini API (using your key) to identify characters and dialogue — this only happens for chapters you choose to prepare, and only while the feature is enabled. The resulting audio is still synthesized and played back on-device.
Support emails may include the information you send so issues can be investigated.
